So you failed your latest WOF because of rust, no matter if your car is worth only $500, the repair cost is $1,250. You have two options: take the risk of selling your car on Trademe or selling it to a scrap yard and canceling the registration.
If you decide to be responsible for the environment and recycle it by sending it to a scrap yard, you need to know about it.
What to do when scrapping a car:
- Get a quotation from 'cash for cars' or 'scrap car removal' services. A quick Google search will give you some phone numbers.
- Choose the best price range and arrange collection.
- When they arrive, try to negotiate the top half of the range they originally offered you. Usually, when the driver arrives, he takes a photo of your vehicle and sends it back to the main office for evaluation.
- Remove the registration card from the windshield and license plate.
- Write down your vehicle VIN number (ideal but not required).
- Collect cash from scrapped cars before handing over the keys and waving goodbye.
The moment when the trailer drives your car to drive is an epiphany. As the weight of the car disappears from the shoulder, you feel free and relaxed. Life without that trash old car feels good. No WOF / COF, service, breakdown, car insurance or worry about parking location.
De-register your car:
- Bring the plate, rego card, and VIN number to any AA, VTNZ center. You can no longer de-register a car from PostOffice.
- Fill out the MR15 form. You need to be the registered owner of the car and present your ID card, the driver's license.
- Deliver this form along with the license plate and the rego card.
- There is a handling fee of $9.10. Any outstanding registration fees or road usage fees (RUC) also need to be settled.
- Any remaining registration will be reimbursed by post to your registered address. If you are like us and you are not living in the Stone Age, you can call NZTA Motor Registrations and request a refund to your bank account.
Old is gold but very old car needs to be gone asap for cash.
